Tacoma, Washington - How do you design a 277,000-square-foot public space without destroying the scale of the neighborhood? You combine classicism with the contemporary and make clever use of a few optical illusions. At street level, this building’s detail meets human scale. Then, as the eye moves up, the building seems to melt into the sky, thanks to reflective materials and the building’s vertical proportions. Result: A signature civic building that blends seamlessly with its surroundings—and a perfect capstone to a decade of downtown revitalization. |
